The railroad reached Oakley in 1866, the village incorporated in 1898, and the Cincinnati Milling Machine Company arrived in 1907 — after which, as the neighborhood's own history puts it, the old race track property was covered in new homes for the factory workers. Cincinnati annexed Oakley in 1913, and streetcars ran to Oakley Square every five minutes through the 1920s and 30s. The mill closed in 2002 and the site became Oakley Station.

Published sources disagree wildly about the median year an Oakley house was built, and the reason is that there is no single answer — a pre-war core plus twenty years of infill does not have a meaningful middle. What matters is which of the two you own.

The City of Cincinnati names Oakley on three of its architectural style pages, more than most neighborhoods: Bungalow, Colonial Revival, and Art Deco for its apartment buildings. Bungalow roofs are documented as low-pitched gable or jerkin-head — clipped gable — with wide overhangs and shed, gable or clipped-gable dormers. Those wide overhangs are the detail that gets damaged and the detail that gets skipped in a quote.

The overhangs on my bungalow are rotting. Is that part of the roof job?
